Sound Of The Month - May

30.5.18

May has been extremely warm and I don't deal well with the warm weather that well at all. This month has seen my love for the musical version of Mean Girls grow quite fast and I'll be talking about that a bit more in this post. This month for me hasn't really been that interesting but July is going to be a bit more fun. Ok so onto the music side of things. Next month The 1975 are set to return and I'm super excited to see what they've done with their sound this time as from what I've seen , Matt Healy has bright orange/red hair that makes him look like Chucky and Gerard Way during the danger days album cycle. Anyway here is what May sounded like.

Bastille - Quarter Past Midnight
I saw someone complaining about how this song wasn't great and I confused because I swear Bastille can't write a bad song. Then again I might be being a little bit biased because Bastille are one of my favourite bands. I feel like this is a different side to Bastille that we've yet to have really hear especially after how heavy and dark Wild World was. This comes across as happy but knowing Dan Smith theres probably some dark and gloomy back story to it. Quarter past midnight is the first song to come from the new album which I'm super excited about. I love this song so much and I can't wait to hear more new music from Bastille.

Saint Raymond - Dancing
Oh my god this song is just bloody great. The chorus reminds me of ABBA for some reason and I have absolutely no idea how or even why it reminds me of ABBA but there we go. Again this is another album I'm looking forward to hearing because the last e.p Callum released was good and now I need an album after hearing dancing. It's one of those songs that I will be dancing alone to because I can't help but bop my head along when listening to it. Do not sleep on this song because its great and makes me feel happy.

Celine Dion - Ashes
Ok so I don't normally to listen anything by Celine Dion but when I saw that this song was for Deadpool 2 I was both shocked and confused. The video for this is everything and even involves Deadpool dancing in heels which I do hope that was Ryan Reynolds dancing in those ridiculously tall shoes because that would be wonderfully hilarious. Ashes reminds me of something that would have been entered into Eurovision but got put on a pile of songs we can't use because they are too good. I still cannot get over the fact Marvel got Celine Dion to do a song for Deadpool for all the movies but somehow it fits perfectly.

Childish Gambino - This Is America
Bloody hell we need to take a moment to just talk about this song and the video because oh my wow. I think the music video is the most important music video of our time. Donald Glover is ridiculously talented and is there anything this man can not do ?! If you haven't watched the video for this yet then you need to but I'm pretty sure most people would have seen it by now anyway. I could say so much about this song but I feel like the video speaks for itself.

Jungle - Happy Man
I was happy to see that jungle decided that they weren't going to release one song but two songs ! Out of happy man and house in l.a , happy man happens to be my favourite out of the two. I've liked Jungle for a while and I'm just so happy that they are back releasing their glittery 70's funk and soul inspired music with a lot more funk and soul thrown in there.

Florence + The Machine - Hunger
This song was going to be a poem originally but I'm so glad it became a song. Also yes expect a lot of Florence to be mentioned on my blog for the foreseeable future as a new album has been announced and is coming out in June ! Hunger is everything I'd expect from Flo. Hunger was performed on the tv for the first time a few weeks back and it was great to see Florence back prancing around and interacting with her fans. Hunger is an absolutely incredible song , I love it a lot.

Wallows - Pictures Of Girls
I have found the song that will be soundtracking my summer for this year. I didn't realise that this is the band of Dylan Minnette who happens to be in 13 reasons why. A lot of people who are in Netflix show's are in bands which is weird but cool. Pictures Of Girls is a super upbeat song that makes me want to jump around. I like a lot of songs that have a very particular sound to them and I listen to a lot of stuff that sounds like this which is obviously the reason why I like this song so much. If you haven't listened to Wallows before then I think they are worth giving a listen.

Charlie Fink - Anywhere
For 10 years now Noah and the Whale have been a band that I've listened to a lot of. I'd been lucky enough to see Noah and the Whale perform just before they announced that they were splitting up. Charlie Fink , who was the frontman of the band has now gone solo and dived into theatre as well which is pretty cool. Anywhere was released in 2015 just after the band announced their split along with a song called My Heartbeat Lost Its Rhythm , which I had heard before. I hadn't heard anywhere before but I absolutely love it. It reminds me of the summer , it's very catchy and I just love this so much. It fills the Noah and the whale shaped gap that I miss dearly.

Grey Henson , Barrett Wilbert Weed , Erika Henningsen and The Cast Of Mean Girls - Where Do You Belong
Oh my god if theres a song from a musical that makes me want to burst into song , makes me think I can tap dance and also want to cry laughing , its this one. Damien has always been my favourite character in mean girls because of how funny his lines are in the film but the songs that Grey Henson who plays Damien on broadway are my favourites because they are so funny. This song is sung when Janice and Damien are telling Cady about all the different cliques in the school.

Talking of Mean Girls I've not stopped listening to the soundtrack since it came out. It's so good and I really want them to bring the show to the UK already because I'm desperate to see it. I like how the songs for different characters have a different sound such as Regina's songs are very dramatic compared to Cady's songs that Erika Henningson's Disney princess like voice just work so perfectly , also Damien's songs are very broadway. I really like Karen's line in Meet The Plastics that is absolutely hilarious and my favourite bit of that whole song.

I thought I'd also take this opportunity whilst I'm talking about music to share my thoughts on the Arctic Monkeys latest release. Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino is not what I was expecting but I also had a feeling there would be something very dark and 60's/70's about this album. To me it sounds more like an album released by The Last Shadow Puppets than the Arctic Monkeys. I like four out of five and thats about it. They lyrics are very clever and creative though like Alex Turner's songwriting is like no other and really has become something special over the years. I find the rest of the songs very same-y and after a while it sounds like your listening to the same song for 40 minutes. I don't dislike the album and I'm sure it will eventually grow on me but for now I'm still unsure on it.
